Recycle your old bra and help raise money

Underwear is probably something you usually want to keep under wraps, but ladies in West Oxfordshire are being encouraged to pull out their old bras and recycle them for charity.

West Oxfordshire District Council is supporting the Witney Wangers campaign to raise money for Against Breast Cancer (ABC) by placing a pink 'bra bank' bin in its Town Centre Shop in Witney for women to drop off their unwanted bras.

All donated bras will be sent for re-use in developing countries in Africa and donations will be made to the charity according to the weight of bras collected. For every tonne of textiles collected, (around 9,000 bras), £1,000 will be given to ABC.

The bra bank will be in the Welch Way shop until 7 September 2011. Banks are also available for donations in:

· Beautiful Creases, 11 West End, Witney
· Clanfield Tavern, Bampton Road, Bampton
· Estilo, 36a High Street, Witney
· Eve, 51b Market Square, Witney
· Papillon, 54 High Street, Witney
· Pirate Fitness, Unit 32 Bridge Street Mill, Witney
· Renaissance, 5 Wesley Walk, High Street, Witney
· Sassi, 62 High Street, Witney

All bras can be donated – no matter how old, grey or out-of-shape, every bra counts.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for the Environment said “As a Council, we are committed to increasing recycling opportunities and minimising waste, so we are absolutely delighted to support a scheme that will not only see these textiles being re-used, but giving assistance to developing countries as well as helping a worthwhile charity.

“I would like to congratulate the 'Witney Wangers' and local businesses who are supporting the campaign for their efforts.”

Hannah Jago, founder of the Witney Wangers said “Sadly we all know of someone who has had breast cancer and many people don't realise that one man every day is also diagnosed with it.

“The bra banks are a light hearted way to raise money for a good cause and they’ll be in the shops until October. We don't judge anyone on the state of their underwear and have already collected over 800 bras so please keep them coming in.”

As well making donations via the bra banks, you can also post unwanted bras to: Against Breast Cancer, Leathem House, 13 Napier Court, Barton Lane, Abingdon, OX14 3YT. Packages should be marked 'Recycling Scheme.'
