Be a good egg and recycle this Easter!

West Oxfordshire District Council is urging everyone to recycle their chocolate egg boxes and packaging this Easter, as ‘roadshows’ get under way for residents to find out about waste and recycling.

Although manufacturers have started to reduce the amount of packaging used, cardboard and silver foil from Easter eggs generates around 4,500 tonnes of waste in the UK each year, according to statistics from WRAP (Waste and Resource Action Programme).

Harriet Perkins, Waste and Recycling Adviser at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We know that residents in West Oxfordshire are doing a fantastic job at recycling and rates have increased significantly since the new waste and recycling service started in November.

“Easter is a time when we expect more waste to be generated and we want to make sure that everyone knows that every part of their egg box packaging can be recycled, including the foil as well as cardboard and plastic. They can do this quickly and simply using their black boxes as part of their normal weekly recycling collection.”

Easter waste and recycling roadshows

Harriet will be helping to run roadshow stalls in the following locations to help spread the message about recycling at Easter, as well as give residents an opportunity to find out more and ask questions about their waste and recycling service:

· Marriotts Walk, Witney: Monday 18 April, from 9am
· Burford Garden Centre: Tuesday 19 April 12-4pm
· Chipping Norton Market: Wednesday 20 April 9am-12pm
· Carterton Market: Thursday 21 April 9 am-2pm

Bank holiday bin collections

Householders are also reminded that waste and recycling collections have been revised over the Easter and May bank holiday weekends.

Collections will be as normal on Good Friday, 22 April. There will be no collections on Easter Monday, 25 April, and all collections after this day during the two weeks following Easter will take place one day later than usual. Normal collections resume on Monday 9 May.

Residents can sign up for free email alerts and reminders about bin collections online at: www.westoxon.gov.uk/waste.

Householders can use their black boxes for a wide range of recyclable materials and a full list of items is available at www.westoxon.gov.uk/recyclingA-Z.
