Flood relief in sight for Witney development

The end of flooding problems may well be in sight for residents of Queen Emma’s Dyke, Ducklington Lane, Witney.

The development, built by Pye Homes, has suffered from localised flooding for many years and properties were hit badly following the July downpour.

Flooding problems have been associated with the overgrown ditch running alongside the Henry Box playing fields, which is largely owned by Pye Homes.

This week Pye Homes has cleaned out the entire ditch. Oxfordshire County Council has also said it will be cleaning out the drains running alongside Ducklington Lane.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment said, “Often different organisations need to be involved to carry out effective flood protection work. We are pleased that the landowner, Pye Homes, and Oxfordshire County Council are taking action which will reduce the likelihood of future flooding in Queen Emma’s Dyke.

“Making all of this happen is part of the review process the District Council is carrying out on behalf of all West Oxfordshire residents. The review will produce a long term flood protection action plan for our district by identifying where works need to be done and by whom.

“Although the full report will not be complete until 2008, we will be putting pressure on making any easily identifiable flood protection work happen as soon as possible.

“We are aware that some of the outcomes of the final report will involve tracking down landowners of ditches (riparian owners) and at times this work will be complex. However, we are adamant that it must be done and any landowner who refuses to co-operate, or is clearly placing properties at risk may find themselves the subject of enforcement action.”
