Signs warn off vandals – West Oxfordshire

West Oxfordshire's Community Safety Partnership is launching a campaign encouraging people to call Crimestoppers in a bid to stamp out vandalism in neighbourhoods throughout Witney.

Twenty tri-signs, which contain information about reporting vandalism anonymously, will be fixed high up on lampposts in the most vulnerable neighbourhoods for criminal damage. The signs display 'Your Street, Your Call. Who pays for the damage? We all do…' Whether the vandalism is the result of alcohol-fuelled disorder or anti-social behaviour from youths, the message to residents is the same - they are the ones who end up footing the bill. Posters will also be distributed throughout the District to raise awareness of the Crimestoppers number.

"Vandalism affects us all whether we are victims or not, either in our insurance premiums or council tax bills," explains Bill Butcher, Crime Reduction Adviser for West Oxfordshire. "The people that commit this type of crime are from within our own community, a neighbour, a friend, maybe even a relative. We hope that residents will take notice of the signs and we understand that there may be some hesitation in reporting people you know to the police because of the fear of any come back. This is where Crimestoppers comes in, any acts of vandalism can be reported anonymously on 0800 555 111."
