West Oxfordshire’s first Sport Relief Mile

Walkers, joggers and runners of all ages and abilities are being invited to take part in West Oxfordshire’s first Sport Relief Mile on Sunday, March 21st.

Taking place in the grounds of the 18th Century Heythrop Park resort in Enstone, the Sport Relief Mile has been organised by West Oxfordshire’s GO Active (Get Oxfordshire Active) team.

GO Active is a countywide project, supported by Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, Oxfordshire Sports Partnership and the county’s five district councils, to encourage more adults to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.

West Oxfordshire’s GO Active team has been organising exercise and dance classes and sessions such as jogging and cycling in different areas of the District and has set up the Sport Relief Mile at Heythrop to give local people the chance to support the annual nationwide fundraising event.

Participants can choose to take part in a one, three or six-mile course around the park grounds, starting at 10am. Entry costs £5 for over-16s, £2 for children, or family entry costs £12, and it is hoped that participants raise sponsorship in aid of Sport Relief.

West Oxfordshire’s GO Active co-ordinator Sarah Sandford, who is based at the District Council, said: “We already have around 200 people signed up to take part in the race and we would welcome anyone who wants to take part. We also need volunteers to help with marshalling, car parking and handing out medals. This will be a fun event in a great setting and we are really keen for people in West Oxfordshire to show their support for this worthy cause.”

This year’s Sport Relief Weekend takes place from March 19th-21st and similar Sport Relief Miles will be taking place across the country, including in each of Oxfordshire’s five districts. The event, which is part of Comic Relief, will raise millions of pounds to help disadvantaged people across the UK and the world’s poorest countries.
