Get dancing / Get ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ tickets

With television show Strictly Come Dancing in full swing, a project has been launched to encourage people to reach for their dancing shoes and take part in classes across West Oxfordshire.

Two Left Feet started on Monday (October 5) and is a ten-week initiative to give people the chance to have a go at dances such as Zumba, salsa mix and street dance.

As well as promising a fun way for people get active, the project is offering an extra incentive to encourage people to take part – the chance to win tickets to the popular Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour.

Classes are running at a discounted rate of £2 at West Oxfordshire District Council’s leisure centres as well as at Bartholomew Sports Centre, Eynsham, and in community halls in Charlbury and Langford. Anyone who attends six or more of the weekly classes will be entered into a prize draw to win the ‘Strictly’ tour tickets.

The following classes are running:

Charlbury – Salsa mix at Charlbury Memorial Hall, Thursday, 6.30-7.15pm
Chipping Norton – Street dance at Chipping Norton Leisure Centre, Thursday, 6.30pm-7.30pm
Eynsham – Zumba at Bartholomew Sports Centre, Saturday, 4-4.55pm
Langford – Salsa mix at St Christopher’s School, Monday, 7-8pm
Witney – Salsa mix at the Windrush Leisure Centre, Friday, 12.15pm-1pm

Two Left Feet is being organised by GO Active (Get Oxfordshire Active), a countywide project which aims encourage adults over the age of 16 to lead more active, healthier lifestyles.

The classes in West Oxfordshire have been organised by the District’s GO Active team, including a co-ordinator based at the District Council and team of ‘activators’ from Nexus Community, which runs the District Council’s leisure centres. Dance classes are also running at different locations across the county as part of Two Left Feet.

Cllr Hilary Biles, West Oxfordshire District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Health, said: “The classes have been organised in locations where there is a gap for dance-related activities and complement other sessions already available elsewhere in the District. We hope that the popularity surrounding Strictly Come Dancing will inspire people to give these and other dance classes a try so that they can find out that being active and keeping fit can also be fun.”

The winner of the Two Left Feet prize draw will receive a pair of tickets to the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour at Birmingham NEC in January 2010 (date to be confirmed).

Two Left Feet is one of several classes and projects set up by GO Active. For more information, contact West Oxfordshire’s GO Active co-ordinator Sarah Sandford on 01993 861564 or visit www.getoxfordshireactive.org.

The District Council also co-ordinates a Dance Directory with details of classes that are available which can be viewed online at www.westoxon.gov.uk/dance.
