West Oxfordshire’s young cricket champions

West Oxfordshire’s young cricket champions Young cricketers from West Oxfordshire are this week celebrating their success at the annual Oxfordshire Youth Games, held at the Oxford University Sports Complex on Sunday 28th June.

The team of 10 to 11 year olds from the Wychwood School, Shipton-under-Wychwood (pictured below), received a first prize medal after competing against teams from the county’s four other districts.

At the Olympic-style multi-sports tournament, other teams from West Oxfordshire also gained medals, coming second in badminton, second in Tennis and third in football.

Cllr Hilary Biles, Cabinet Member for Leisure said, “Congratulations to the Wychwood School cricket team’s wonderful achievement. All the West Oxfordshire teams, regardless of their final position, put their all into their sports and gained a lot out of the event. These youngsters are real role models for their peers.”

In the months leading up to the Youth Games, trials and tournaments were organised by West Oxfordshire’s School Sports Partnership and District Council to select squads. Over 600 children were involved in this process, all gaining additional coaching and development through school and club links.

The event, which is co-ordinated by the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership (OSP), aims to increase and promote participation in sport.
