Explosion in Oxford

Police and the fire service are currently at the scene of an explosion at a Royal Mail building in Cowley, Oxford.

Officers were called to the depot, in Alec Issigonis Way, shortly after 12pm today, by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service.

Nobody was injured in the incident, which is believed to have happened in an engineering workshop, although witnesses have been treated for shock.

At this time it is not clear whether the explosion is the result of an industrial incident or other reason. The local authority's Environmental Health department have been informed and as soon as it is safe to do so an investigation will begin to determine exactly what has happened.

** UPDATE **
The cause of the explosion is still to be confirmed, but it is thought that it may have been down to a gas cannister.
