Awards for West Oxfordshire’s tourism industry

West Oxfordshire’s two Visitor Information Centres have been awarded the title of ‘Highly Commended’ in Tourism South East’s Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2012.

Both Burford and Witney VICs were given the awards in the Visitor Information Provider of the Year category at a ceremony last night (28 November).

The VICs, which are run by the District Council as part of its commitment to supporting and encouraging tourism in West Oxfordshire, were among five other West Oxfordshire businesses accredited in the regional awards.

Top Gold awards went to The Feathered Nest, in Nether Westcote, in the ‘Pub of the Year’ category and to Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, which took gold for ‘Sustainable Tourism’.

The local businesses were picked from hundreds of entrants from across the South East to be finalists for the awards, which recognise excellence, quality and innovation across all sectors of the tourism industry. In total, there were 16 award categories.

Cllr Richard Langridge, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Communities and Culture, said: “Being shortlisted in six out of 16 award categories is testament to the quality of tourism businesses in West Oxfordshire. We are absolutely delighted that the VICs and other local tourism businesses have been recognised in these prestigious awards for the outstanding service they provide to visitors to our beautiful District.

“Our Council understands the importance of tourism to West Oxfordshire and its economy and the VICs in Burford and Witney are part of our work to continue supporting and strengthening the industry locally, and encourage more visitors to the area.”

The local finalists were awarded as follows:

Large Attraction: Blenheim Palace, Woodstock – Silver
Pub of the Year: The Feathered Nest, Nether Westcote - Gold
Self Catering: Chimney Farm Barns, Chimney, Bampton - Silver
Small Hotel - The Lamb Inn and The Bay Tree Hotel, Burford – both won Silver
Sustainable Tourism: Blenheim Palace, Woodstock - Gold
