Witney waste and recycling roadshow

Next week is national Recycle Week (18 - 24 June) and West Oxfordshire District Council is working to raise awareness of recycling, especially plastics recycling, during the week.

A waste and recycling roadshow is being held on Market Square, Witney on Tuesday 19 June from 11am - 3pm. Residents can come along and find out how they can recycle more and help to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for the Environment at the District Council, said “We’ve been recycling plastic in West Oxfordshire for over 10 years but I’m sure many people will be surprised to find out just how many different plastics we collect.”

The types of plastics collected include:
* Bottles (eg milk, drinks, shampoo and washing up bottles)
* Food trays (eg ready meal, fruit and take away trays, biscuit trays)
* Tubs (eg margarine and ice cream tubs)
* Pots (eg yoghurt and plant pots)
* Flyaway plastics (eg carrier bags, polythene, small clear food packaging, cling film, bubblewrap and compost bags – but these must be put in a plastic bag inside your black box).

Cllr Harvey also said, “Most people know that plastic drink bottles can be recycled but many forget about all those bottles in the bathroom, from shampoo and shower gel, to bleach and cleaning products – all of these items can be recycled too.”

All the plastic bottles collected from households are taken to a sorting plant where they are recycled to make every day items such as garden furniture, fleece clothing and more plastic bottles.

A wide range of other items can also be recycled as part of the weekly black box collections, including paper and cardboard, tetrapaks, tins and cans, newspapers and magazines, glass, textiles and shoes. A full list of items that can and cannot be recycled is available on the council’s website.

At the roadshow council recycling advisors will be on hand to offer help and advice about:
* General household recycling (including plastics)
* Food waste recycling
* Garden waste recycling - including how to register for free collections
* Home composting

If you cannot make it to the roadshow but would like more information on the waste and recycling service, or would like to order another recycling box, please visit www.westoxon.gov.uk/waste or call 01993 861025.
